from January 15 through April 15 Crestone Mountain
Zen Center is closed to the public for our annual
ninety-day Winter Practice Period. If you are
interested in the Practice Period 2008, please
contact
Abbot Zentatsu Baker-roshi.
Sesshin
At Crestone Mountain Zen
Center we hold two seven-day sesshins each year
(April 1-8 and December 1-8). These are silent,
seven-day intensive meditation retreats, generally
for practitioners who have already established
an on-going practice relationship with our Sangha.
To apply for sesshin please contact
Abbot Zentatsu Baker-roshi or Assistant Abbot
Koyo Welch-sensei.
Meals during sesshin will be eaten oryoki style.
We ask that returning practitioners bring their
own oryoki set. Arrival is between 5 pm and 6
pm (before dinner), departure after a brunch on
the last day.

Seminar with Zentatsu Baker-roshi
“Yogacara and Koan Study”
(10/9-14): Introducing the topics to be studied
during the Practice Study Month (see below), Baker-roshi
will lead a four-day seminar focused on conceptual
understandings of and practice-entry into Yogacara
teachings and Koan study. The Monastic Seminar
will combine a traditional meditation schedule
with lectures, study and discussions.
Meals will be eaten oryoki style. We ask that
returning practitioners bring their own oryoki
set. Arrival is between 5 pm and 6 pm on Thursday,
departure after a brunch on Tuesday around 11

Practice
Study Month
with Koyo Welch-roshi and Zenki Christian Dillo
“Yogacara and Koan
Study” (10/16-11/13): This Practice
Study Month is for experienced practitioners who
have a developed relationship with the Center.
Through individual study, group discussions, presentations
by the participants, and dharma talks by Koyo
Welch-roshi and Zenki Christian Dillo, we will
explore Yogacara teachings and how we practice
with them, particularly in our study of koans.
Our study will be framed by zazen, service, oryoki
meals and work practice. The Practice Study Month
will take place from October 16 – November
13.
Participants are welcome to join the Monastic
Seminar in Crestone (October 9-14) and the Sangha
Seminar in Boulder (November 14-16), which are
scheduled right before and after the Practice
Study Month. For those participants who can stay
for the entire Practice Study Month, the introductory
Monastic Seminar with Baker-roshi will be free
of charge.
If you are interested in participating in this
Practice Study Month, please download or request
an application form and send it to us. We encourage
you to participate in the whole Practice Study
Month. Short-term participation can be negotiated
individually. After being accepted we will send
you reading material and a reading list. Please
come prepared!
Meals will be eaten oryoki style. We ask that
returning practitioners bring their own oryoki
set.

Work
Month Intensive
From May 15 through June 9 we will dedicate one
month to maintenance and work projects in preparation
for the Summer Guest Season, which is reflected
in a more intensive work-oriented schedule. During
this time the student fee is reduced from $35.00
to $15.00 per night. In addition to the daily
work schedule there will be morning and evening
zazen meditation, a formal (oryoki) meal at breakfast,
and study. There will also be a more informal
lunch and supper.
Periodic
Work Intensives
From time to time we schedule a work intensive
to accomplish important work projects. Over the
years we have collected a list of volunteers whom
we contact by email or phone for these projects,
often on short notice. Please let us know if you
would like to be on this list, and indicate your
particular skills.
Work
Exchange Program
The Work Exchange Program is designed to give
you the opportunity to participate in our Zen
programs and daily practice in exchange for helping
us with the cooking and housekeeping during our
Summer Guest Season. One day of work earns one
day of credit at the monastery. Students may apply
their credit towards sesshins, seminars, weekend
sittings, short-term participation in practice
period or participation in our regular practice
schedule.
(Please note that credit for work exchange does
not cover teaching donations.)
Your participation in our Summer Guest Season
is an important and deeply appreciated component
of Crestone Mountain Zen Center’s ability
to produce the income that allows us to maintain
and develop our facilities and sustain the practice
here. We hope that time spent here during the
Guest Season can also be a valuable learning experience
for you. Framed by daily morning and evening Zazen,
we work together in a highly cooperative and concentrated
way. In addition, with the guidance and supervision
of Koyo Dan Welch-roshi and the other experienced
cooks in residence, this can be an opportunity
to learn how to cook or to hone your already existing
cooking skills.
Work exchange is offered only during and around
our scheduled Guest Season events – for
a list of already scheduled dates see below. Places
for work exchange are limited. Please contact
us for availability.
June 20-June 29: Group Motion (Manfred Fischbeck)
